Charles Ray Jeffers, of Helenwood, widower of Shirley June Brumett Jeffers, passed from this life on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving children. He was 84.

LIFE

Born in Scott County on July 16, 1941, Charles was the son of Richard “R.D.” Zachery and Louise Shoopman Zachary. He enjoyed camping, fishing, coon hunting, riding his Harley trike, and being outdoors.

Per Charles’ wishes, cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Pine Knot Funeral Home on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., with a procession to follow to Reed Cemetery in Helenwood. As a special tribute, it is requested that everyone who will ride their bikes in the procession, weather permitting.

Barbara Jean Bond, departed this life on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Tennova North Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. She was 79.

LIFE

Barbara was a loving nurse for more than 30 years. She leaves behind many family members and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Rella Faye Hatfield Burchfield, of Oneida, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at her home. She was 90.

LIFE

Born April 8, 1936, in Norma, Scott County, Rella was the daughter of the late James Bedford and Gertie Jane Byrd Hatfield. She was a member of First Baptist Church Oneida, which she loved, especially her WMU ladies and Sisters of the Skillett. She loved her many friends, especially talking to them on the phone and spending time tending to her flower garden. Her favorite times were spent with her family.

Rondon Keith Hutson, of Helenwood, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 88.

LIFE

Born May 7, 1937, Rondon was the son of the late Frank A. and Hettie Posey Hutson. He was a faithful member of Pine Creek United Baptist Church, where he had been a member for many years. He served in the United States Army from 1960-1962 in Darmstadt, Germany, with Btry B 1st Rkt How Bn 28th Field Artillery Company 8th Infantry Division 7th Army.

Born Jan. 12, 2005, Wyatt was the son of Lance Lowe and Nancy Raines Lowe. He will be remembered for his kind spirit, his love of life, and the joy he brought to those who knew him. Wyatt enjoyed spending his time playing his PlayStation, racing, fishing, and most of all, being with his friends and family. His laughter, presence, and the memories he created will be cherished forever.

Born April 24, 1949, Jo Ann was the daughter of the late Riley Phillips and Flora Marie Acres Phillips. She peacefully transitioned into eternal life with the Lord. She will be fondly remembered for her vibrant and radiant spirit, her unwavering faith, and her kindness.

Steve H. Musselman departed this life on Monday, May 4, 2026. He was 72.

LIFE

Born Jan. 4, 1954, Steve was the son of the late Frank C. Musselman and Virginia Lay Musselman. One could often find Steve on the side of the road selling socks and construction safety items. He was known as the “Sock Man” for many years. He enjoyed fishing and walking 60 miles a week. He was a humble and faithful servant of Jesus, loved reading the Bible, and enjoyed preaching the Word of Jesus. Steve attended The Anointed Church of the Living God.

Ruthie Rachel Ellis Walker, of Helenwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026, at her home. She was 66.

LIFE

Born Aug. 10, 1959, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ruthie was the daughter of the late Hurstle and Mary Kathern “Kitty” Ellis Miller, and the late Richard “Dick” Miller. She was a Christian and happiest when she was outside tending to her flowers and yard work or spending time with her animals. Above all else, her heart belonged to her family. Her greatest pride and joy were her granddaughters, whom she loved beyond measure.

Max Edward Howard Jr., known as Eddie, of Oneida, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at his home. He was 49.

LIFE

Eddie was born in Delaware, Ohio. His hobbies and favorite things to do were slinging mud in the mountains, vacationing at the ocean, and big family get-togethers.

Oscar Curtis “Bud” Keeton, of Oneida, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. He was 87.

LIFE

Born Feb. 18, 1939, Bud was the son of the late Seamon and Mable Buttram Keeton. Bud grew up in the Huntsville area and was a member of White Rock Baptist Church. He proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force. Following his service, he dedicated 32 years to working at Huntsville Elementary School, where he made a lasting impact on generations of students. Bud enjoyed spending time in nature. He loved Jeep riding, working on and riding motorcycles, and hunting for petrified rocks.

Tina Stamper, 99

Ernestina Elizabeth Stamper, lovingly known as “Tina,” departed this life Saturday, April 25, 2026. She was 99.

LIFE

Born July 23, 1926, Tina was the daughter of the late Ernest and Georgia Litton Chitwood. She was born in Paint Cliff, Ky., and was raised in Oneida. She later made her home in both Kentucky and Ohio. She was the heart of her family—a woman who helped raise several nieces and nephews, as well as two of her granddaughters. She was more than a grandmother; she was a second mother, a steady presence, and a source of unconditional love to all who knew her. A woman of remarkable strength and determination, Tina achieved a lifelong dream by earning her high school diploma at the age of 70 alongside her brother Richard. She retired from General Motors and went on to start and run several successful businesses, including a carry-out where she made homemade pizzas and a bar and grill. Above all, Tina loved the Lord. She sought Him daily, and her life was rooted in faith and prayer. Her life was a testament to faith, hard work, and unwavering love.

Charles Wayne Bertram Sr., of Oneida, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026, at his home. He was 80.

LIFE

Born Jan. 6, 1946, Charles was the son of the late Ora Stella Clouse Bertram and Albert Howard Bertram. He moved to Oneida with his wife Lois in 1967, where he worked at BF Goodrich (HBD) and Tibbals Flooring until they purchased Phillips Dry Cleaners in 1988. Charles, along with his wife and family, ran the local dry cleaners until his death. He raised his family and operated his business while giving back to his community through his pride in his dry-cleaning service for 38 years.

Born June 28, 1939, Deanna was the daughter of the late Lester Marshall Pence Sr. and Jessie Eva Campbell Pence. She was born in Staunton, Va. She and her husband Harold owned their own antique shop, auction business, and mini storages called Outback in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. She loved to create oil paintings of animals and landscapes and won numerous awards at art shows in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. She was a graduate of Marion College in Marion, Va and retired as a faithful government servant after 25 years at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Deanna was a born-again Christian of the Methodist faith.

Odell Thompson, 94

Odell Thompson, of Oneida, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 94.

LIFE

Born April 19, 1931, Odell was the son of the late George and Bessie Hunley Thompson. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #695, where he was a three-time Past Master. He loved music and played guitar, especially bluegrass and gospel. One of his greatest joys was playing music with his great-grandson Tyler. He also enjoyed NASCAR and riding motorcycles. When he wasn’t riding, he spent time helping his son with motocross racing. He loved church and taught Sunday school at New Haven Baptist Church for many years, sharing his faith with everyone he met. Later in life, when he could no longer attend regularly, he watched church services on television. He enjoyed fixing things, troubleshooting problems, and had a strong work ethic, retiring from Hartco Flooring Co., where he valued both his work and the people he worked alongside. He loved his family deeply, never met a stranger, and was known for his stories, humor, and warm hugs. He was also a devoted caregiver to his wife, Mazel, before her passing.

Arvis Blakley, 96

December 30, 1929 – April 11, 2026

Arvis Glynn Blakley passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 96.

LIFE

Born Dec. 30, 1929, Arvis was the son of John Hamilton Blakley and Edith Pearl Stonecipher Blakley. Arvis joined the Air Force out of high school and served in the Korean War as a forward air controller. Following that, he completed college at Tennessee Technological University and began his teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse on Cherry Fork. Over the next 50-plus years, he served in both the Scott County School System and the Oneida Special School District in various roles, including science teacher, principal, and materials coordinator. For more than 30 years, he was the director and later president of the Tennessee Technology Center, now the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, where he oversaw the expansion of the school into a greater role in serving the community. During this time, the Huntsville campus was built and later named The Arvis G. Blakley Campus in his honor. Arvis had many close friends during his life and loved them all dearly. His greatest joy was his family, whom he cherished deeply.

Karen Crabtree, 63

Karen Jane Caldwell Crabtree departed this life on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. She was 63.

LIFE

Born April 9, 1962, Karen was the daughter of the late Verlon and Cora Caldwell. As one of 13 children, she defined herself with her full-of-life personality and bright energy. She was neither the oldest nor the youngest. When she was a child, the family moved to Tennessee, where she later married Allen Wayne Grider and had her first child, Darick Grider. She later married Edward Crabtree and had her second child, Devin Crabtree. She was a devoted mother to her two sons and remained steadfast in caring for them throughout her life. Her greatest love, aside from Jesus, was her family, especially her two granddaughters, Alexis Snider and Elaina Crabtree. She was a dedicated Nana who enjoyed spending time with them. She was creative and a successful cosmetologist who once owned her own salon and treated her clients like family. A natural caregiver, she spent much of her time caring for others. She had a gift for seeing people and showing them kindness and generosity. She loved spending time with her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Dianna Mae Honeycutt, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 79.

LIFE

Born June 17, 1946, Dianna was the daughter of Kenneth and Lillian Mae Holmes Breedlove. She enjoyed music, sewing, crafting, reading, watching movies, traveling, photography, decorating, scrapbooking, doing her family tree, and making floral arrangements and veils for weddings. She loved going to church, meeting new people, and welcomed a good mystery. She was a Sunday school teacher for more than 45 years and her class was one everyone loved. You could count on her to have a kind word to say and to always include everyone to make them feel welcome. Although she had many hobbies, her favorite times were those spent with her family, church family, and her golden retriever, Matrix. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. Dianna shared this message: “I love my family and church people more than anything. I love my Lord and I know where I’m going. I want everyone to come there with me. I want everyone to know my Lord is the best thing that could ever happen to you. He’ll walk beside you, keep you, and guide you.”

Born Jan. 13, 1940, Pauline was the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth Griffith. She has been a faithful member of Low Gap Baptist Church. Pauline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning house, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found joy with the love of her life, Commodore, getting out and running the roads.

James Walker, 95

August 1, 1930 – April 3, 2026

James Arthur Walker passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2026. He was 95.

LIFE

Born Aug. 1, 1930, James was the son of the late Thomas Nelson and Zida Kline Walker. He was born at home in the Brimstone community and was the youngest of six children. He graduated from Robbins High School in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in 1954. He began his lifelong career in education in August 1954, teaching chemistry, biology, and general science at Robbins High School, later serving as assistant principal beginning in 1962. He earned his Master of Science degree in chemistry and biology in August 1971 from Middle Tennessee State University and was appointed principal of Robbins Elementary School that same year, serving until his retirement from the Scott County School System in August 1986. Following retirement, he remained active, serving as director of the Summer Youth Employment Program through ETHRA and teaching biology for five years at Roane State Community College. James was deeply committed to his community. He served on the Scott County Hospital Board of Directors from 1968 to 1981, was a charter member of the Scott County Planning Commission, and helped organize the Highland Health Council’s Board of Directors. He served on the Mountain People’s Health Council Board for more than 50 years, many as chairman. He was also a founding member of the Robbins Community Club, helping develop community facilities near the school where he taught for 32 years. He was a Master Mason for 74 years with Scott County Lodge No. 670 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Sunshine Chapter No. 279 for 73 years. His service was recognized with the Scott County Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and the Caryl E. Carpenter Excellence in Community Support Award in 2013. He maintained his membership in Slick Rock Missionary Baptist Church and attended First Baptist Church of Robbins for more than 60 years. James found great joy in his family, hard work, tending his garden, working on the farm, and serving others.

Lola Dean Davis Honeycutt, of Helenwood, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Oneida Nursing and Rehab Center in Oneida. She was 83.

LIFE

Born Jan. 10, 1943, Lola was the daughter of the late Dawsie Davis and Rose Chitwood Davis. She was a lifetime member of Tunnel Hill Baptist Church, where she served for many years in many capacities until 2011. She later attended Black Oak Baptist Church in Oneida and was very happy there. Dean was known for her good cooking, especially her chicken and dumplings and homemade biscuits. She loved to sew and quilt.

LIFE

Born Dec. 2, 1946, Gerald graduated from Tennessee Tech and began a career in banking with First Trust & Savings Bank in 1972, continuing until 2009. He later worked with Peoples Bank of the South until he retired to his small farm, where he enjoyed being on his tractor. He was a longtime believer in his community and supported local businesses. He was saved on May 11, 2024.

Born Oct. 3, 1949, Faye was the daughter of the late Edward William and Dorothy Alene Daugherty Stephens. Faye was devoted to her forever love, Jim, for nearly 58 years, and their five children. She was a God-fearing prayer warrior and loved serving God beside her husband and family. Her heart was full of love for all her family. She had the most loving, tender heart you could find. She enjoyed caring for and spending time with her family. Our lives have been richly blessed to have had her.

Wendell Anderson, 93

Wendell Earl Anderson, formerly of Oneida, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was 93.

LIFE
Born Aug. 6, 1932, Wendell was the son of Earl Sheridan and Golda LeValley Anderson. He graduated from Xenia Central High School in 1950. He earned a BS degree in animal science from Ohio State University in 1954, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He was a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a State Farm Insurance agent for more than 34 years and was a true example of the “like a good neighbor” advertisement. He was always active in youth and livestock organizations. He served as a 4-H advisor, president of the Green County Beef Association, president of the Eastern Limousin Breeders Association, director of the Ohio Limousin Association and president of the Old Timers Club. He enjoyed raising Limousin beef cattle, collecting Minneapolis Moline tractors and toys, and cheering for his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. He was always active in his church. He served as a deacon for many years at East Dayton Baptist Church. After moving to Oneida, he became active at First Baptist Church and cherished the fellowship he found there.

Born Oct. 20, 1950, Mary was the daughter of the late Cecil E. Butler and Helen Goodnight. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, making cards, and loved gardening. She was also a part of the singing group the Travelers that went to nursing homes. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Huntsville and delighted in singing in the choir. She was also instrumental in helping to install the blessing box that included clothing, food items and personal items at First Baptist Church of Huntsville. She had a servant’s heart and loved the Lord and always thinking of others. She and her husband took many mission trips together to several countries. Doug and Mary loved to travel and visited at least 30 states together. She was a wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend.

Nina Butler, 57

February 19, 1969 – March 6, 2026

Nina Michelle Davis Butler passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 57.

LIFE

Born Feb. 19, 1969, Nina was the daughter of Rodney Davis and Pam Davis. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend whose life was marked by faith, love, and service to others. She was the devoted wife of Jay Butler for 35 years, and together they built a family rooted in the love of Jesus. She was a devoted mother to Emalee, Ethan, and Erin and a proud grandmother to Elowyn Maeve Arroyo and Bennett Davis Butler. Nina and Jay’s journey together began at Oneida High School as they started their senior year in 1986. They married on June 1, 1991, and her gentle strength and steadfast partnership enriched every chapter of their lives together. Her nurturing heart guided their children through life’s joys and challenges, always encouraging them with compassion and an open ear. To her family, she was the heart of their home, and her presence was a constant source of comfort and joy. For 16 years, Nina taught first grade at Oak Mountain Elementary School in Birmingham, Alabama. Her classroom was a place where children felt seen, heard, and celebrated. Students flourished under her patient guidance and creativity, and colleagues remember her as a mentor and friend who taught not only academics but also kindness, perseverance, and joy. For more than 20 years, Nina and her husband served together at Hunter Street Baptist Church, where they cared for three-year-old children on Sunday mornings. Through their gentle guidance and joyful presence, they helped nurture the youngest hearts, sharing their faith and love with each child they encountered. Her compassion and generosity also defined her friendships, and she was known for offering encouragement, wisdom, and comfort to those around her.

Born July 7, 1960, Tammy found her greatest joy in the simple moments of life. She loved spending time with her sister and best friend, Wanda, sharing laughter and conversation. Tammy also adored her dogs, who she lovingly considered her babies, and they brought her great comfort and happiness. Tammy will be remembered for her love of family, her loyal heart, and the warmth she shared with those closest to her.

Ronald Troxtell, of Helenwood, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. He was 57.

LIFE

Born Aug. 27, 1968, Ronald was the son of the late Franklin Denver Troxtell and Vivian Honeycutt Troxtell. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Autumn, and a proud and loving father to his two children, Jaylynn and Kaden, who were the center of his world. Ronald will be remembered for his love for his family, his steady presence, and the countless memories he created with those he loved. His absence leaves a space that can never be filled, but his spirit will continue to live on through the lives he touched.

Larry West, 79

Huntsville
January 19, 1947 – March 8, 2026

Larry Richard West, of Huntsville, transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 8, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 79.

LIFE

Born Jan. 19, 1947, Larry was the son of the late Harold and Ida Bell Coffey West. Larry was a longtime teacher and businessman. Following college graduation, he taught in the Scott County School System and at the Tennessee Technology Center. He later established Scott Appalachian Industries in 1984, serving as executive director until his retirement. He also founded Housing Opportunities and People Enterprises (HOPE) in 1997, developed an alternative-fuel station using compressed natural gas, and helped youth develop athletic skills by coaching his children’s youth teams. He helped start the Scott County Junior Pro leagues and coached several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. Most recently, he was awarded “Person of the Year” by the Independent Herald and the Scott County Chamber of Commerce. He served on many state and special-interest committees to improve both local and special-interest policies. His desire was always to improve the lives of citizens in the community and to make things better for all. He was a member of White Rock Baptist Church, where he served in many roles. He was a Christian man who loved the Lord and Savior and strove to live his life in a manner pleasing to God, according to His word, as the provider, protector, and spiritual leader of his home. His favorite Bible verse was 2 Corinthians 3:17: “… where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

Glenn “Doc” Shepard departed this life on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026. He was 79.

LIFE

Born Dec. 2, 1946, Glenn was the son of the late Ronald Glenn Shepard Sr. and Ester Foster Shepard. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and friend whose life was defined by faith, hard work, and family. He lived his life with quiet strength, humility, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. He was a member of Slick Rock Missionary Baptist Church. In 1976, he purchased his first Ford FL 9000 coal truck and founded Shepard Trucking. Through determination and grit, he built a livelihood rooted in honest work. When the coal industry declined, he adapted, transitioning to over-the-road truck driving — a testament to his resilience and strong work ethic. In 2001, Glenn began sharing his knowledge, skills, and steady presence with Shepard Trucking LLC, owned by his son, Derek. From that moment on, he became the backbone of the company. Glenn worked faithfully alongside his son until his final days, doing what he loved and being exactly where he wanted to be. Above all, Glenn cherished his family. He was a constant source of support, wisdom, and love, leaving a legacy that will continue through generations. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, those who knew and loved him take comfort in God’s promise and the assurance that Glenn is now with Jesus.

Charlie Monroe Griffith was promoted to his Heavenly home on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, at North Knoxville Medical Center in Powell, Tenn., with his loving family by his side. He was 78.

LIFE

Born Aug. 31, 1947, Charlie was the son of Everett and Mary Taylor Griffith. He was a simple, hard-working man who loved to make people smile by giving them something handmade from his woodshop. To know him was to love him. He was a gentle giant who treated everyone he met with kindness and Godly love. He was a loving father, papaw, brother, uncle, and friend, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. They were the center of his world. Charlie loved the Lord. Of all his many titles, Child of God was his favorite. He was always ready to talk about the Lord to anyone who would listen. He was ordained as a deacon in January 1976 at Lone Mountain Missionary Baptist Church and was a member at Slick Rock Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He loved his church and church family. He was also a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Vietnam.

Born Aug. 11, 1937, in Helenwood, Wilma was the daughter of Wiley and Ogal Clark. She was of the Baptist faith.

Charles Condie, 82

Oneida

January 20, 1944 – February 11, 2026

Charles A. “Chuck” Condie, of Oneida, formerly of Sewickley, Pa., and Aliquippa, Pa., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, at his home after a brief illness. He was 82. He was a wonderful husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed by his beloved family.

LIFE

Born Jan. 20, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Charlie was the son of William and Catherine Condie. Before moving to Oneida in 2008, he worked in broadcasting in the Pittsburgh area for 43 years. He retired from WPXI-TV after 38 years. He graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1962 and Electronic Institute in 1963. He held a radio telephone first class license with radar endorsement. Charlie was a member of the Doric Masonic Lodge No. 630 in Sewickley, Pa., where he was a member for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Oneida Masonic Lodge No. 695, where he was a Past Master in 2013 and 2017, a member of the Kerbela Shriners in Knoxville, a member of Sunshine Chapter No. 279 Order of the Eastern Star in Robbins, a member of Sapphire Chapter No. 259 Order of the Eastern Star in Oneida, a member of Rugby Methodist Church in Elgin, a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, a member of ARRL and Big South Fork Amateur Radio Club, and was licensed in Pittsburgh as K3HGR and changed to W4IIC when he moved to Tennessee. He was an active amateur radio operator for 67 years.

Born Sept. 17, 1950, Ida was the daughter of the late Monroe Sexton and Julie Jeffers. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved taking care of others and spending time with her family and friends. The most important thing in her life was her boys; they were her joy.

Born April 18, 1960, Stanley was the son of Wendell and Gladys Lay of Scott County. He loved working on cars and was a skilled mechanic. He worked many years at Home Depot in the home and garden department. He had a passion for wrestling and loved watching it, talking about it, and practicing it on his son and nephews.

Neva June Harness West, of Oneida, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at Big South Fork Medical Center, with her loving family by her side. She was 63.

LIFE
Born in the Bull Creek community on March 16, 1962, Neva was the daughter of Robbin and Betty Harness. She was a member of Buffalo Bridge Missionary Baptist Church. She was a proud grandmother. Her grandsons were her pride and joy. She also enjoyed making candy with her sisters, taking girls’ beach trips, shopping, growing flowers, canning and cooking, and she loved pestering her younger brother, Edmond, and treasured all the farm time they spent over the years, along with the pictures he sent during her final days.

Tammy Wright departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. She was 66.

LIFE

Born May 6, 1959, Tammy was the daughter of Rev. C.J. “Josh” and Doris Laxton Thompson. She enjoyed taking care of others, spending time with her family, and watching ballgames. She was an avid Vol fan. At a younger age, she loved riding motorcycles and horses. She was a devoted member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for 48 years, where she was director of the youth choir. She loved playing piano and singing in church, and was a faithful servant for the Lord. She adored giving hugs and being mother and Mamaw to the community. She will be deeply missed but always remembered as a loving wife, Mamaw, sister, and special friend to everyone who knew her.

Michael Lee Babb, of Oneida, took his heavenly flight on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. He was 57.

LIFE

Born in Oneida on April 4, 1968, Michael was the son of Leland and Ethel Babb. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Baptist Church. He was a man who always had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone he came in contact with. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed nothing more than being out in God’s country. He loved the calm and beauty of being outside and said that was when he had the best talks with the Lord. He was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan and loved music.

Born May 12, 1962, Kathy Jo was the daughter of Ronnie Jeffers and the late Donna Jeffers. She found joy in the things she loved most – her family, traveling, and music. She especially loved the band BTS, whose music brought her happiness and comfort. She enjoyed exploring new places and making memories along the way, but nothing meant more to her than time spent with her family. Whether cheering on her children and grandchildren or simply being together, Kathy Jo’s love and devotion to her family were at the heart of her life.

Born April 24, 1964 to the late Carlie and Vivian Zachary Lloyd, Doug was known for his lovable, one-of-a-kind personality and was considered a friend to everyone. Whether he was coaching youth sports or educating students at the Scott High School Alternative Center, Doug was a beloved mentor to countless children throughout the community. His most cherished roles were that of a loving father and the world’s greatest Poppy. Most importantly, he was a born-again, Bible-believing Christian who boldly professed his faith and loved the Lord Jesus Christ with his whole heart.

Sandra Gay Boring Thompson departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 80.

LIFE

Born Sept. 14, 1945 to Arse Mayford and Eula Edith Manis Boring, Sandra was a beloved Christian mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was marked by honor, selfless service, and a steadfast devotion to Christ that touched all who knew her. To her family, she was a constant source of strength, wisdom, love, and prayer. She was deeply cherished by her children, grandchildren, extended family, and church family, all of whom were blessed by her gentle spirit and faithful heart. She was proudly known as “Grammi” to her three grandchildren. She was “GG” to six precious little boys who brought her immense joy. They will miss her warm hugs, loving smile, playing with her and her collection of vintage toys, and her steady presence that made them feel deeply loved. A devoted member of White Rock Baptist Church, she found great joy in serving her church family. She especially loved decorating the church, pouring her creativity and care into events such as Vacation Bible School, Christmas, and other special occasions. Through these acts of service, she reflected her love for the Lord and her desire to make others feel welcomed and valued. She was known throughout her church and community as a woman of kindness, humility, and quiet strength. Her life stood as a good Christian example—one of faith in action, compassion for others, and unwavering trust in God’s promises. She loved being outdoors, nurturing her garden, jet skiing at the lake, embellishing her creative talents, and traveling with the many adventures of her children and grandchildren. Though she will be dearly missed by her family, church family, and community, they rejoice in the assurance that she is now at peace.

Bill R. Dunlap passed away on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026. He was 76.

LIFE

Born Oct. 3, 1949, Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community servant whose life was defined by dedication, hard work, and love for family and friends. He dedicated time and service for 53-plus years to Scott County and the surrounding area as the owner/pharmacist of Plateau Drugs. Bill truly loved his profession and found great purpose in going to work each day and serving his community with care, integrity, and compassion. For decades, he was a trusted and familiar presence to those he served. Above all else, Bill cherished his family. In his free time, Bill enjoyed playing golf, a pastime that brought him relaxation and camaraderie. He also had a lifelong passion for anything Tennessee, proudly supporting the Volunteers as a longtime season ticket holder. His loyalty, enthusiasm, and pride for his team were well known to those who shared game days with him. Bill will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Those who knew him will always remember his steady presence and the familiar smell of his pipe, a lasting reminder of the man he was. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, both personally and professionally. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Born on April 29, 1943, Stanley was the son of the late Everett and Mary (Taylor) Griffith of the Brimstone community. Stanley was a simple, honest, straightforward, hardworking man and veteran. He loved to dig ginseng, dig under cliffs for arrowheads, and gardening. Stanley got right with his Lord before passing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother.

Dillard Massengale, 78

October 18, 1947 – January 7, 2026

Dillard “Hacksaw” Massengale departed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026. He was 78.

LIFE

Born Oct. 18, 1947, in the Smokey Junction Community, Dillard was the son of Elmer Massengale and Clemmie Lowe. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was combat-wounded. He received several medals with high honors, including the Purple Heart.

Hertis Phillips, 86

Oneida
July 29, 1939 – January 11, 2026

Jerome “Hertis” Phillips, of Oneida, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at his home. He was 86.

LIFE

Born July 29, 1939, Hertis was the son of the late Leamon and Millie Keeton Phillips of Oneida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an ordained minister. He pastored New River Missionary Baptist Church, Tunnel Hill Baptist Church, and New Haven Missionary Baptist Church. He retired from Big John’s after 28 years as a supervisor, served as a county commissioner for 13 years, and was a driver for ETHRA for many years.

Roy Reagan, 80

Lee Roy Reagan departed this life peacefully at home on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026. He was 80.

LIFE

Born May 23, 1945, Roy was the son of Myrtle Reagan. He joined the United States Army at age 17 and served for more than three years before being honorably discharged. He was a craftsman and collector and enjoyed sharing these interests with his children, grandchildren, and close friends.

Sarah “Kathryn” McBee Keck, of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. She was 76.

LIFE

Born Sept. 22, 1949, Kathryn was the daughter of William Lon McBee Jr. and Mabel Elizabeth Adkins McBee. She was a graduate of Central High School Class of ’67 and earned a BS from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She retired from AT&T and was a member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church. She loved music, especially singing with the church choir for many years. She was also an avid reader.
