Weekend Weather
☀️ It’s going to be a really nice day today, sunny and warm!
ALMANAC: Sunrise/Sunset: 7:07/6:33 • Normals: 53°/29° • Records: 73° (1981), -4° (1963) • Year-To-Date Rainfall: 11.6″ (Normal: 10.2″).
DETAILS: It’ll be sunny today with a high of around 60°. If there’s a downside, it’ll also be breezy, with wind gusts to 20 mph. But it’s hard to complain about that!
WEEKEND: A cold front will sweep through late tonight. We’ll only get to around 50° tomorrow with wind gusts to 20 mph, and Sunday we’ll struggle to get out of the 30s. The good news is that both days will feature plenty of sunshine.
NEXT WEEK: Our stretch of sunny, dry weather will continue Monday as we get back into the 50s. Then we’ll see rain chances begin to build Tuesday and Wednesday. The primary threat of rain will happen Tuesday night. With a low pressure system well to our north and a cold front sweeping behind it, the primary rain threat will be a line of showers and thunderstorms just ahead of the cold front Tuesday night. The current timing looks to be early Wednesday morning, but this is still a ways out, so the details will change. This could be a modest rainmaker for our area. There will also be a slight risk for severe weather. Although the primary severe weather threat will likely be to our south, the Storm Prediction Center is monitoring severe weather chances as far north as the TN-KY border.
FURTHER OUT: Behind the storm system, we’ll experience cooler weather once more. We’ll be in the 60s on Wednesday, then only in the 40s on Thursday. There’s no threat of extreme cold or snow on the horizon; temperatures look pretty bland through the first half of March — not too warm and not too cold, although some days will be warmer (and colder) than others.
The Latest
» Scott High’s Lady Highlanders will host Fulton tonight, and it will be the first region tournament game ever played at Highlander Gymnasium. TSSAA began satelliting the first round of the region tournament in 2007, but neither Highlander team has finished in the top two in the district to earn a region game at home since that time. However, the Lady Highlanders did it by winning the District 4-3A Tournament at Union County High School on Monday.
The Lady Highlanders are 24-6, and one win away from tying a program record for single-season wins, at 25.
Tonight’s opponent will be Fulton. The Falcons enter with a record of 9-16, but that mark belies the strength of this team, which has played a difficult schedule. Scott High Coach Rusty Yaden said the Falcons’ length and athleticism concerns him, and he’s implored his team to ignore their opponent’s overall record.
Tonight’s game is an elimination game; the loser’s season is done.
Coach Yaden has called upon the community to turn out in large numbers for Friday’s game.
“Highlander fans, the atmosphere you provided for the girls Monday night was absolutely electric! The girls fed off your energy and you fans were an important part of winning that championship. As a coach, I am often asking for more from my players. Well, Highlander fans, the girls and I are asking for MORE from you on Friday night. We hope you absolutely pack the gym full and bring every ounce of energy you have,” Yaden said Thursday.
Admission is $8 and doors will open at 6 p.m.
Oneida’s Lady Indians are also in action tonight, and will be traveling to Hampton as the No. 4 seed from District 2-2A. The Bulldogs are the District 1-2A champion.
Tonight’s game will be played at Hampton Elementary School.
Oneida upset South Greene in the region quarterfinals last year, when the Lady Indians were a No. 3 seed and the Rebels were a No. 2 seed who were undefeated at home.
Both of tonight’s games will be broadcast live on the IH Sports Network, with the Baby J’s Pizza Pregame Report beginning at 6:45 p.m. Live video for postseason games is sponsored by First National Bank.

Our latest E-Edition was published yesterday evening. The cover story: the Cicada invasion that’s expected in Scott County this spring. Brood XIV has lived underground for 17 years, but will emerge sometime in May, and millions of the large (but harmless) insects are expected in Scott County. You can read it now in our E-Edition and look for the story to be posted to indherald.com later today.
