Welcome to the Independent Herald!

Founded in 1976, the Independent Herald is the Voice of Scott County, Tenn. and Big South Fork Country. In attempting to remain on the forefront of the latest trends in community news publishing and content delivery, we’re currently experimenting with pushing all of our content to our readers via newsletter format rather than a traditional website. These newsletters will be archived here, on the web, but will also be immediately delivered to subscribers via email. For now, we’ll continue to maintain our website, but if we become comfortable with our ability to push content to our readers in this format, this will gradually become the new indherald.com. We will offer several different newsletters, emailed to subscribers on different days of the week. You can subscribe to as few or as many as you wish. Although we’ll additionally return to a paid subscriber format for certain content, all our content is ad-supported and free to read at the present time.

Our newsletters

  • THE DAYBREAKER: A news-first newsletter delivered on Monday mornings. This is one of two “main” newsletters, delivered Mondays and Thursdays. It includes news that’s occurred over the weekend, plus a look at the week ahead. In addition to traditional news stories, this newsletter also includes features about our community and its people.

  • THE WEEKENDER: A news-first newsletter delivered on Thursday evenings. This is the second of two “main” newsletters, delivered Mondays and Thursdays. It includes news that’s occurred during the week, plus a look at the weekend ahead. In addition to traditional news stories, this newsletter also includes features about our community and its people.

  • THREADS OF LIFE: An obituaries newsletter that honors those we love who have changed our community through the ways they lived their lives. It is presented courtesy of Jones & Son Funeral Home and West-Murley Funeral Home and is delivered Wednesday afternoons.

  • ECHOES OF THE PAST: A history newsletter exploring the people and events of the past that have helped shape Scott County into what it is today. This newsletter is delivered on Tuesdays.

  • FRIDAY FEATURES: Beyond the news, so to speak. These are the stories that aren’t straight news, but that tell the tale of our community and its people. This newsletter is delivered on Fridays.

  • VARSITY: Sports, and only sports. This newsletter is delivered over the weekend, and covers local high school sports from the week past.

  • EYE TO THE SKY: Our weather prediction team keeps you up to date with weather that will impact our lives. This newsletter is not published on a regular schedule. It is only published when weather is expected that’s beyond the ordinary. When such weather is expected, it may be published daily, or multiple times per day, as circumstances warrant.
